Frequently Asked Questions

This page answers questions about event registration, our website, and membership.

Questions About Event Registration

Q: I'd like to bring a friend to an event for half-price, but the system isn't letting me. Why not?
A: "Bring a guest for half-price" is a promotion we are offering to our Annual Members in good standing. If you are not seeing the half-price option, it is for one of two reasons:

1) You are a part of our Free Newsletter list, but are not yet a member. We encourage you to join!

2) Your membership has lapsed. When a person's membership is about to expire, we send email notifications ahead of time. If the membership isn't renewed, then upon expiration it is automatically switched to Free Newsletter status. Please click here to renew!

Q: The event for which I want to register is sold out. Can I get on a wait list?
A: Yes, if it is not full. Please send an email address to rsvp at nycupa dot org -- which is also listed on the event page-- to request being added to a wait list.  Include your name, email, phone number and the name of the event you're interested in.  In addition, we encourage you to check the event page close to the day of the event; in case of ticket cancellations, space may open up.

Q: How long does it take to get a refund?
A: Usually, you will receive a refund within a week or two of the event. For questions, please contact our Treasurer at treasurer at nycupa dot org.

Q: Can I buy a ticket and renew my membership at the same time?
A: Unfortunately, our site does not have this feature.  Please renew your membership first. When you've completed that step, you can then sign up for the event.  We're sorry for the inconvenience.

Q: I want to buy a ticket to an event, but I'm not interested in joining NYC UPA at this time. Why do I have to create a profile?
A: This is a requirement of our web system.

Q: I'm a member of UPA in another city, and I'm visiting NY. What price do I pay for an event?
A: You would pay the non-member rate. Members of our parent organization, the UPA (Usability Professionals' Association), must join the NYC chapter to qualify for member rates.

Q: What is the deadline for registering for an event?
A: Our events are usually held on Tuesdays, therefore the deadline for registering is typically the Monday night before the event. However, policies may vary depending on the venue.

Q: Do I need to bring a printed confirmation letter to the event?
A: While not required, we encourage you to bring your receipt to speed your entry, particularly if you are taking someone else's place.

Q: Can I walk in and buy a ticket at the event?
A: Most of our events are online registration only as we aren't set up to handle or make change.  Many events also take place at high-security venues which require attendee lists in advance to clear front-desk (particularly Bloomberg). Please email rsvp at nycupa dot org to inquire for more details. If you plan to walk in to an event, please bring exact change, and be advised this does not guarantee you a seat.

Q: I bought a ticket, but I can't make the event. Can I transfer my ticket to someone else?
A: Yes, ticket transfers can be made on or before an event by sending a request to rsvp at nycupa dot org. Many of our events take place at high-security venues which require attendee lists. Please make transfer requests reasonably ahead of the event.

Q: I bought a ticket, but I can't make it and have to cancel. What do I do?
A: Refund policies vary per event. Please check event notifications for refund request cutoff dates, or email rsvp at nycupa dot org.  Typically, a refund will be issued by our Treasurer within a week or two after the event. Alternatively, you can transfer your ticket to someone else before the transfer deadline (please see the FAQ ticket transfers).

Questions About the Website

Q: What is my username?
A:Your username is the email address you supplied when you registered.

Q: What is my password?
A:Please use the "Forgot Password" feature to obtain a new password.

Q: I used the "Forgot password" feature but I still can’t log in. What do I do?
A: Please contact us at membership at nycupa dot org.

Q: I used to sign up through your old site. Why did you switch?
A: Before April 2009, the NYC UPA online presence was cobbled together via a website ISP, two email contact management systems, an event registration vendor, an Access database on a volunteer's laptop, and a lot of manual labor. Each monthly event was a challenge to coordinate and manage. In April 2009, the NYC UPA moved its online presence to its new home on Wild Apricot.com, which offers website capabilities, member database management, and other automated tools --all under one roof-- which makes it considerably easier to manage the organization. This move allows us at NYC UPA to spend less time managing the logistics of each monthly event, and more time acquiring compelling, high-quality speakers and programs. It will also allow us to provide additional member benefits, such as an opt-in member directory.

Q: The "Add to Calendar" button doesn't work for me. Why?
A: This feature is targeted towards Microsoft Outlook and Mac users.

Q: Why is the RSS feed button not working?
A: This appears to be a bug in older versions of browsers such as IE 6. We've logged the issue with our vendor and hope to have a resolution at a later date.

Questions About Membership

Q: I used to be a member of NYC UPA, but I think my membership lapsed. How can I find out?
A: Please login to the site, select the "View Profile" link in the gray box at the bottom left. The first section, "Membership Details", displays your membership status and renewal date.  Alternatively, please email membership at nycupa dot org.

Q: My NYC UPA membership lapsed a long time ago, but I still receive emails. Why?
A: NYC UPA lapsed members are automatically switched to "Free Newsletter" status. If you no longer wish to receive messages, you can unsubscribe.

Q: I'm a member. What happens if I don't renew?
A: This website is configured so that lapsed members are automatically switched to "Newsletter Only" status. You will continue to receive our email event notifications unless you unsubscribe.

Q: How do I unsubscribe?
A: You can click here to be taken off our mailing list.

Q: I tried to register for an event, but the Member Rate was grayed out. Why?
A: This is an indicator your membership has lapsed. You can choose to renew, or continue your transaction as a non-member.
